Honoring Sergeant William J. Woitowicz
A memorial service was held on June 7 at the former Stonebridge Field in Groton honoring Sergeant William J. Woitowicz on the 5th anniversary of his death. He was killed during a heroic effort to save other members of his squad while conducting combat operations in Badghis Province, Afghanistan. Billy was a member of the Class of 2007 at Groton-Dunstable High School where he was involved in athletics and played on the basketball team.
Entering the Marine Corps following his graduation, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Special Operations Regiment, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Camp Lejeune, NC. He received several awards including the Silver Star and Purple Heart. On November 10, 2012 Stonebridge Field was renamed the Sergeant William J. Woitowitz Field.
