Town Clerk Evaluates Alternative Polling Locations for Precincts 2 & 3

Town Clerk Michael Bouchard advised Selectmen he will investigate alternative locations for polling for Precincts 2 and 3. Currently, Precinct 2 and 3 cast votes in Middle School North gymnasium. He cited potential exposure for students by having so many people in the school when it is in session.

Bouchard said he has spoken with the Middle School principal, School Committee and Police Chief and all are concerned. Student safety is paramount, and limiting public access to the building during the school day would ensure greater security.

He cited four potential solutions and asked Board support to investigate and make a recommendation.

First is holding a Professional Day for teachers on Election Day. Downside is that teachers have one professional day per year, and Bouchard said he expects four elections this year.

Second is to 'beef up police presence' with four to six officers around the school.

Third is to move polling location. He suggested Prescott School, Groton Pool & Golf, Town Hall and Legion Hall as possible sites. Parking and handicapped access will be priority for relocating the polling site. "I'd like to look at all of these and come back with a recommendation," Bouchard said. Town Manager Mark Haddad offered to work with Bouchard on the assessment.
