Albert Palmer Gould, 98

At the age of 98, Albert P. Gould died quietly, January 2, 2013 at his home in Groton surrounded by members of his family. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Lowell (Ware) Gould who passed away in 1988. He was the son of the late Emily (Creighton) Gould and Albert Trowbridge Gould of Cambridge. Gould was born in Boston and attended the Belmont Hill School; then Graduated from the Thomaston, Maine High School before attending Bowdoin College.

He loved the sea and sailing and made two trips around the world serving in the purser's office on a Dollar Steamship Line vessel. He joined the US Navy in 1940 where he served for a year on the USS St Augustine before being given command of a 75 foot patrol boat for two years. He was then transferred to Kaneohe Naval Air Station in Hawaii for two more years. At the end of the war, he came back to Groton, where he joined his wife and son, Albert P. Jr, on his wife's family farm Shepley Hill.

He worked for Simonds Saw & steel Company in Fitchburg. For 32 years as Manager of Transportation. He was a former Trustee of the Nashoba Community Hospital, when it expanded in the 50's.

Along with his wife, they helped to found the Groton Outing club which involved many of his outdoor interests, and sports. He was a firm believer in the family and the Outing Club was a family organization; they organized canoe trips, ski races, and many other events. As his three daughters got more involved in horses, so did Albert. He cleared old apple orchards, built many jumps, and was a co-organizer of the Shepley Hill Horse Trails for 27 years. He was also a member of the Cruising Club of America, and the Groton-Pepperell Rotary club.

He is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth L. Reeves and Anna Eliot, both of Groton, and Susan McLean of Boiling Springs, PA. He has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visiting Hours were held at Badger Funeral Home. 45 School Street, Groton, Sunday January 6. Funeral Services were held at the First Parish Church, Powderhouse Road, Groton on Monday, January 7. Private Burial at Forest Hills Cemetery Boston.
