Allan Ellwood Smith

Allan Ellwood Smith of West Groton died at home of natural causes on Wednesday, March 4, 2020; he was 67 years old.
Born on May 4, 1952, to Evelyn Mary Smith (Spinney) and Vernon Lawrence Smith Sr., Allan lived on Kemp Street in West Groton for most of his life. He attended Tarbell School and graduated from Groton Dunstable High School in 1970, where he was an accomplished cross-country runner. He studied art at Mount Wachusett Community College before enlisting in the Air Force in 1971.
     In the Air Force, Allan was an electronic warfare specialist He was stationed at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam and Lor- ing Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, where his only child, Joshua Allan Smith, was born on July 10, 1975, to his only wife, Sheila Pauline Smith (Desilets).
     For the past 30 years, Allan worked as a farmer at Flat Hill Orchards in Lunenburg. Allan loved working outdoors and is perhaps best remembered for the cows and pigs that he and his family raised on Kemp Street, which often got out of their pens and into his neighbors’ yards. Allan is survived by his son, Joshua; granddaughter, Tilly Erin Smith; brother, Vernon Lawrence Smith Jr. (Larry); nephew, Sam Smith; and Sam’s daughter, Mia. Allan was beloved by his family, friends and neighbors, and will be dearly missed in West Groton and beyond.
