Brooks Thomas Lyman, 79, of Groton, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2019 at Nashoba Valley Medical Center, of complications due to congestive heart failure. Born in Boston, he was an alumnus of Wentworth Institute of Technology with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was skilled in electronics and mechanics, methodical-detail oriented, and enjoyed designing and trouble-shooting machines and logic boards. An old school gentleman, introspective, reserved, he was respectful, appreciative, and generous privately. A lifetime member of the NRA, he strongly defended his interpretation of the second amendment. As a devoted fan of classical music, especially opera, he played the recorder and en- joyed singing. An aspiring entrepreneur, he formed a couple of small manufacturing companies.
Interested in history, politics, arms regulations, theology, manufacturing, he actively relayed links to his interests to those on his email list. For many years he coached the MIT Pistol Team. His education included attending the High Mowing Waldorf School and he was one of the founders of the Arlington Waldorf Elementary School. He also served as a trustee for several years on Christian Community Movement For Religious Renewal (CC) Board of Trustees and helped establish the church in Brookline. He moved to Groton in the 1980s and became actively involved in the community and local politics. He served on several committees including the Groton Building Committee and Groton Housing Authority, and was a candidate for the Select Board several times. He had strong and consistent opinions and wasn’t afraid to speak up at town meetings. At the time of his passing he was an active member of the GHA and CPC.
A small service was held at the CC for him on Saturday, Nov. 2. A local-based memorial service may take place next spring.
Pre-deceased by his parents, he leaves an extended family and a warm close circle of friends. Arrangements by the McGaffigan Family Funeral Home, 37 Main St., Pepperell. Donations in his name can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
