OBITUARY: Winthrop W. Sherwin at 97

Winthrop W. Sherwin, 97, of West Groton, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at RiverCourt Residences, West Groton

Mr. Sherwin was born in West Groton, November 23, 1918, the last surviving of eleven children born to Daniel A. and Elizabeth M. (Bywater) Sherwin and was a lifelong resident of West Groton.

He was a 1936 graduate of Groton High School and in 1941 enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps where he served for four years attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant.

For over 70 years, with his brother, Lawrence and later his sister, Helen, “Winnie” owned and operated Clover Farms Market in West Groton, retiring in December 2006.

A horse racing enthusiast, he owned several trotters through the years. He was a communicant of St. James Church in West Groton. The Groton Board of Selectmen declared November 23, 2008 Winthrop W. Sherwin Day in Groton in honor of his 90th birthday.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews and a large number of friends.

He was predeceased by his brothers Frederick, Wilbur, James, Laurence, Francis and Bernard and his sisters, Mary L. Swieca, Emma Sherwin, Florence Sawyer and last month, Helen “Sis” Swieca.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on April 22nd at St. James Church, St. James Avenue, West Groton. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ayer.
