Solon Baker Colby

Solon Baker Colby, Jr, 90, long time resident of Groton, MA, went home to be with Jesus on June 29, 2018, at Grace Living Home in Marietta, GA.

He was born in Manchester, NH on August 10, 1927 to Solon Baker Colby, Sr. and Shirley (Paine) Colby. He attended Pembroke Academy in Pembroke, NH and graduated from Meredith High School in 1945. He served his country in the US Navy for three years. Then on August 20, 1948 he married Eleanor May Randall In Meredith, NH.

Solon graduated from New England College and began his 33 year career as a structural engineer in the Boston area.

By 1959, he had a large family with 7 children and most of his family time was centered around eating meals together and attending Sunday School, Church, and camping. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Braintree, MA, First Baptist Church of Groton, MA, Faith Evangelical Church of Acton, MA, and Immanuel Church of Chelmsford, MA.

In his free time, he enjoyed playing competitively on bowling leagues, the pool league at the Chelmsford Senior Center, and the Senior Golf League at the Groton Country Club which he was instrumental in forming.

Solon is survived by his seven children; Claudia Lancaster of Junction, TX; Deborah Mitchell and husband, Gerald of Bridgewater, NH; Linda Camp and husband, Stephen of Groton, MA; John Randall Colby of Gilford, NH; Robert Solon Colby and wife, Becky of Audubon, NJ; Kathleen Goguen and husband, John of E. Aurora, NY; and Marsha Sproul and husband, George of Jaffrey, NH. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Eleanor R Colby; his brother, John Paine Colby, Sr., his sisters, Carolyn Colby Brouillette, and Janice Colby Slater, as well as a niece and 3 nephews.

A celebration of Solon’s life will be held at Immanuel Church in Chelmsford, MA on July 28, at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chelmsford Senior Center or a ministry of your choice would be appreciated.
