IHM FLUTE Festival and Orchestra Concert

The extraordinary flute is in the spotlight this month as Indian Hill Music presents flute workshops, masterclasses, exhibits and concerts.

Acclaimed jazz and classical flutist Jim Walker is special guest artist. The former principal flute for the LA Philharmonic, and founder of acclaimed jazz quartet Free Flight, Walker has not only performed at the Oscars with Paul McCartney, but his expressive flute playing, considered the industry "gold standard," is heard on over 750 movie soundtracks and commercial recordings from Aladdin to Zoolander.

Now focused on mentoring flute students, Walker will be the featured performing artist and clinician at the Indian Hill Music School Flute Festival Saturday, March 28 at 36 King St., Littleton. Event is FREE and open to the public. Walker will hold a masterclass at 10 am, and give a recital with Indian Hill faculty pianist Jenny Tang at 11:30 am. Free flute workshops and exhibits will happen throughout the day, capped by a recital by IH faculty and Orchestra musicians at 6:30 pm. In addition, Acton-based flute manufacturer Wm. S. Haynes Company will sponsor a reception at 5:30 pm. Participants can register online.

Sunday, March 29 at 3 pm, Walker will perform in concert with Maestro Bruce Hangen and the Orchestra of Indian Hill at Littleton High School, 56 King St., Littleton. Featured works include Nielsen's Flute Concerto, Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite, Debussy's Petite Suite, plus jazz selections with Walker and the Orchestra. Tickets $20-50 (students $15) available online at indianhillmusic.org, or by calling (978) 486-9524. All seating reserved. There is a pre-concert talk at 2 pm with Maestro Hangen; and a post-concert Stage Talk.

The Flute Festival is made possible by an NEA Challenge America Grant.
