Members of the Groton Dunstable Regional School Committee: Chairman Marlena Gilbert, Jeff Kubick and Brian LeBlanc, met with the Select Board to vote jointly to appoint a replacement for an open position on the School Committee.
Two candidates stepped forward.
One is former School Board member Peter Cronin, who opted last year not to rerun for his position due to increasing business commitments. Now, he said, those have changed and his schedule would allow for a return to the School Committee.
The second candidate, Ann Doble, was a newcomer for the Committee and was unable to make this meeting. Gilbert said she spoke with Doble over the phone.
Chairman Gilbert stressed that both were very good candidates, adding that the appointment was for one year. She stressed that it is an important year as contract negotiations are scheduled during this period. She said, “Previous experience in this area would be a benefit to the School Committee.”
Select Board member Becky Pine noted that ”bringing new people into government was a good thing. And I don’t want to discourage he (Doble).”
Kubick replied, “We’ve been through this before contract negotiations and it’s necessary to get up to speed quickly.”
The motion was then made to appoint Peter Cronin to the vacant School Committee position. The Select Board voted 4 to 1 (Becky Pine) to appoint Cronin, while the School Committee voted unanimously for Cronin as the choice.
