G-D SCOREBOARD

SOFTBALL

GD 11, Fitchburg 9

GD softball got their first win of the season, defeating visiting Fitchburg 11-9 on a rainy Monday afternoon better suited for Make Way for Ducklings. But the win was more than enough to send the girls’ home delirious with the taste of victory!

The hot bat of senior captain Whitney Ellis continues as she went 3 for 4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. Erin Jussaume went 2 for 2 with two runs scored.

The Crusaders trailed 4-1 after two innings but plated 7 runs in the fourth, keyed by Ellis’ bases loaded double. They added three more in the fifth and held on for the win. Jenna Beauchain went the distance on the mound with 5strikeouts and also had a hit. Junior captain Emma Wilson, Susanna Majkut and Kana Norton each contributed offensively with key hits. Records: GD (1-11), Fitchburg (2-10).

Shepherd Hill 20, GD 3

(May 8) Whitney Ellis (2 for 3 with a 3 run homer), Cassidy Heulings (single), Emma Wilson (hit, run scored), Jenna Beauchain (hit, run scored), senior captain Nicolette Sanazzarro (hit)

Westborough 13, GD 2

(May 9) Whitney Ellis (3-3, HR), Erin Jussaume (base hit), Emma Wilson (base hit, run) provided the offense. Jenna Beauchain (base hit) went the distance on the mound and had 3Ks.

“We continue to work and come to practice with enthusiasm,” shared Coach Keegan. “Much of practice is spent teaching the basics which at the varsity level should be part of their DNA.

But the kids are learning, making the correct decisions, hitting cut offs, backing up plays. Short stop Emma Wilson handled a well hit ground ball, made the force unassisted at second base and threw to first base. The runner beat the throw to first but Wilson made the right decision. It’s a work in progress but good things are happening.”

BASEBALL

Westborough 2, GD 1

Westborough’s Ryan Nichols allowed a run on three hits while pitching a complete game. Nichols helped his cause, singling in the tying run and scoring the winning run in the sixth inning.

Junior Jared Whitby, who was pitching a strong game, ran into trouble in the fourth inning. With two outs the sacks were full of Rangers prompting coach LeBlanc to call time out. “I told him (Whitby) we were going to play this inning on our terms. Take your time and relax.” The young right hander got the message, getting out of the jam with a strike out.

Kasey Griffiths hit what appeared to be a two run home run in the bottom of the fourth. However, Westborough appealed stating the GD lead runner on second base during the homerun missed third base.  The umpires ruled him out and the Crusaders got only got one run on the play.

Westborough scored both (2) runs in the sixth inning. The first run was plated on an RBI single.  The second occurred when a balk call was made with a runner on third.  The pitcher’s landing foot twisted while executing a pitch and he threw the ball into the ground in front of him.

“Very bizarre circumstances,” recalled coach LeBlanc. “I have never had either of those happen, and for them to happen in the same game is wild.

“We could have been sharper both in the field and at the plate. We will learn from it and get better!”  Records: (W) 8-5, 3-1 Mid-Wach B), GD (6-4, 4-1).

GD’s Declan Nash played well in net and long stick middie Colin Teduits was strong on defense.

Wachusett 9, GD 1

“The one sided score, does not reflect a solid defensive effort by the Crusaders,” shared varsity boys lacrosse coach Rick Clark. “Offensive errors led to five unsettled goals that were created from missed passes or shooting flaws,” said Coach Clark.

Declan Nash played another solid game in net with 14 saves. Ryan Bernard scored the lone goal for GD. Mike Lawton continued his solid defensive play as the defense allowed only three settled goals.

GD 16, Marlborough 5
