GD 3, Nashoba 2
On May 30, the Crusaders (12-5, 6-2 Mid-Wach B) clinched the Mid-Wach B League title by defeating Nashoba (11-8, 5-3) in a nail biter of a game. JV Coach Joe Bisbee tweeted “Captain Kasey Griffiths hit an absolute bomb to tie it in the sixth, and the go-ahead single in the seventh,” driving in Jared Whitby with the winning run to lift the Crusaders over the Chieftains. Whitby went 2 for 4 with a stolen base and Isaac Zhang added a single and an RBI. Doug Tompkins robbed a Chieftain of a homerun to close out the game. Pitcher Brendan Ferrari and catcher Andrew Watkins turned in another stellar performance.
“Very dramatic win over Nashoba last Thursday to win the league title,” shared varsity baseball coach Matt LeBlanc. “We finished the regular season at 12-6.
“Last night we had our Midland-Wachusett League All-Star meeting where there were 13 spots for All-Stars. We had four All-Stars including junior Brendan Ferrari league MVP, senior Kasey Griffiths, junior captain, Jared Whitby and freshman Isaac Zhang.
Brendan pitched, played right field and shortstop while batting .356 BA, .446 OBP, with 9 SB, 16H, scored 15 runs and drove in seven runs. When pitching, he had a 4-2 record with one save and had complete game wins over Nashoba twice, Wachusett (shutout).
Kasey played first base, had a 400 BA, .462 OBP, .691 SLG, 22 hits, 2 HR, 22 runs scored, eight BB, 9 stolen bases and, 16 RBIs.
Jared Whitby was very strong defensively at shortstop and second base for the Crusaders. The smooth swinging lefty hitter compiled a .356 BA with a .435 on base percentage. Whitby had eight stolen bases, 21 hits, 14 runs scored and eight RBIs. He also pitched, ending the regular season with a 3-2 record and an impressive 1.45 ERA.
Versatile Isaac Zhang played center field and pitched. “Just crazy offensive stats,” said LeBlanc. Zhang has a .444 BA, .509 on base percentage, 20 hits, 16 RBIs, 12 runs with 7 stolen bases. Isaac swings from the left side with most of hits, line drives. “He had the most productive freshman season during my tenure at GD,” added LeBlanc.
Honorable mention to junior Joe O'Malley who played 3B/SS, .317 BA, .400 OBP, 9 SB, 19H, 9 BB, 15R, 9 RBI. “Very high baseball IQ,” commented LeBlanc. “One of the best infielders I have ever coached. He is very capable at third, shortstop and second base. Joe made many very big defensive plays for us all year.”
