George Boutwell came to Groton in 1835 at the age of 17 where he worked a Henry Woods’ store on Main Street. Woods eventually made him a partner and The continued to work in the store even after Woods’ death in 1841. In 1851 he was first elected to two terms as governor of Massachusetts.
