LETTER: Nashoba Tech NOT Outperforming GDRHS

To the Editor:

The recent article stating "Nashoba Tech Outperforms Groton-Dunstable Schools" is a misleading headline and the article misrepresents the data provided by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

The article compares the Level 1 Rating of Nashoba Valley Technical High School against the District wide rating (all schools, elementary through high school) for each town located in Nashoba Tech's district. A more accurate comparison would be to compare only the high schools located in their district. Then, in addition to rating, the school percentile can also be analyzed. School percentile is ranked between 1 (low) and 99 (high) and is reported for schools with at least four years of data. This number is an indication of the school's overall performance relative to other schools that serve the same or similar grades.

While Ayer-Shirley Regional High School and North Middlesex Regional High School both achieved a Level 2 Rating, the remaining high schools in the district, along with Nashoba Tech, all achieved a Level 1 Rating.

Further, Chelmsford High School scored in the 78th percentile, Littleton High School in the 90th percentile, Westford Academy in the 95th percentile, and Groton-Dunstable Regional High School in the 98th percentile. Conversely, Nashoba Tech scored in the 43rd percentile.

While the Level 1 Rating is to be commended, to state that Nashoba Tech is outperforming all of the other high schools in their district is simply not true.

Sincerely,

Tim Brown
