Support Fields for Kids
Dear Editor,
Let's give the children of Groton a chance to play team sports on safe fields. Volunteer boards for baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer and softball collectively provide opportunity for over 1500 girls and boys. The current number of fields is inadequate resulting in over use, poor conditions and dangerous parking congestion. It is becoming impossible to provide playing opportunities for the growing number of children who want to play.
Groton Recreation Association (GRA), a collection of all outdoor youth sports programs, is working with Groton Parks Commission to solve this problem. The Ledge Rock Project will result in construction of three new playing fields in Groton. The town owned land is adjacent to exiting playing fields at Cow Pond. This project will meet today's need and provide room for future expansion.
To date, the Groton Community Preservation Committee has agreed to support the project with an allocation of $309, 000. Member programs of the GRA are ready to contribute $50,000 and $400,000 will come from a PARC grant. The remaining funds are included in a town warrant article for $141,000.
The project is unanimously support by both the Groton Community Preservation Committee and the Board of Selectman. The GRA is asking Groton voters to support the warrant at the April 22 town meeting.
Thank you,
Phil Jordan
Chairman, Groton Recreation Association
