NEWS: Gordon Newell Retires

Gordon Newell, 65, long time West Groton Water District General Manager, was recognized this past Saturday night for his years of service. How appropriate that his retirement celebration was held at the Groton Senior Center, located on West Main Street directly across from Newell's Crossing Rd.

With Carol, his wife of 45years seated several feet away and his family and friends watching, Newell was recognized by W.G.W.D. Commissioners, Robert Blood, Emmett Risdon and Douglas DeNatale. "On behalf of the members of the W.G.W.D., we, the Board of Commissioners, wish to commemorate Gordon Newell for his 42 years of tireless service to the district," DeNatale told the crowd. Tireless, spearheaded, instrumental, modernizing are some of the words DeNatale read, but most reverent were, "Gordon has used his personal skills, charm, resourcefulness, intelligence and common sense to create a fiscally healthy, well-functioning, reliable water-system that delivers high quality and abundant water to District customers".

"Thank you for coming tonight, but I have to say that this board has allowed me to do my job and have stood behind me," said Newell to a cheering crowd.

After Gordon was done speaking he was presented with a beautiful shadowbox, displaying pictures of some of Gordon's exceptional contributions, made by co-worker, Diana Cole and a humorous caricature drawing by local artist, Janine Doucette LaValley and signed by those who attended. Gordon and Carol will leave for a well deserved Florida vacation before settling into "retirement mode".
