OBITUARY: Richard Marriott Sampson
Richard Marriott Sampson, 88, passed away on February 24, 2014. He was born in Groton, on May 2, 1925, the son of George Fay and Phyllis (Marriott) Sampson.
Dick attended the Groton public schools and graduated from Groton High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Army during WWII and served in the Pacific.
After the war, Dick returned to Groton and resumed working at the First National Store. When the First National closed in Groton, he was transferred to Pepperell, then Clinton and later to the Belmont store. During his retirement, Dick also worked at Whalom Park, Conductor Lab, NAPA Auto Parts and the Groton Market.
Dick was a member of the Laurence W. Gay Post #55 of the American Legion, the Groton Grange and the Groton Lions Club. He played the piano and enjoyed going out to listen to local pianists like Ray McKeon and Rod Ford. In more recent years he was a cast member of an entertainment called "The Golden Smoothies."
Dick is survived by his long-time companion Janice Riggs, Townsend, MA; niece Janice Faye Wolfe, Holden, ME; and several cousins from around the country and from England. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters Joyce S. Wolfe and Shirley S. Mahoney and brother in law Bruce Wolfe.
