Betsy Sawyer Remembered

Selectman Josh Degen expressed the Board’s condolences to the Sawyer family and to the many children

At the opening of this week’s Selectmen’s meeting on Monday April 1, having learned of the passing of middle-school teacher Betsy Sawyer earlier that day, Selectman Josh Degen expressed the Board’s condolences to the Sawyer family and to the many children she inspired as well as her many friends and fellow educators.

He explained that it was her vision to produce a huge book, the largest book in the world, about peace, a book that became a focus of community effort and inspiration to students for more than 10 years, bringing renown to Groton far beyond its borders. He noted that a few days before she passed, she witnessed and participated in the presentation of the ‘Big Book of Peace’ at the United Nations. He said, that the book was shown in the lobby of the United Nations headquarters in New York City and that the book and all the effort that went into making it was ‘a testament to her life.’

He added. ‘She will be missed.’
