Girls Soccer Team Squeaks Out Win
Senior Lindsay Werner scored Groton-Dunstable's lone goal of the contest, on a perfect feed from Nicki Little, and the Crusaders (4-3-1) held on to the beat visiting Shepherd Hill (2-5-1), 1-0 in non-league girls soccer action.
Both teams had scoring opportunities but defense was effective with Rams keeper Ally Nuttall making seven stops in the first half to five for Crusader senior Elyssa Briggs.
Little collected a nice through pass from Elena Biasi but her attempt was wide. Werner's goal beat Nuttall low to the far corner in the 33rd minute of the first half.
Marianna Murphy and Brianna Considine communicated constantly and were solid on defense limiting Rams forwards quality shots.
After the break, with Brooke Walker between the pipes, Shepherd Hill stepped up its intensity, never allowing GD a shot in the first seven minutes while challenging the Crusader backs.
Midway through the half, Ariana Lacombe and Brittany Belanger had a spirited flurry inside the 18 with Walker making an outstanding save with help from the cross-bar. Sydney Volpe hit a nice corner but no one was home to finish. There was a fine defensive effort when Considine made a fine sliding tackle on a break-a-way on a Rams forward. The Crusaders travel to Quabbin Thursday, Oct. 9.
