SPORTS: Groton Pool and Golf Center Course Improvements

The Course Improvement Fund Raiser was able to contribute $4,000 raised this year to fix the forward tees on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes. The tees were raised, leveled, de-marcated and sodded.

A stone boundary was added to the forward tee on nine, matching the men's tee box work done last year. Fortunately the work was before the weather changed. The tee boxes need time to settle and the sod to take root, so they will not be used for play until springtime.

GPGC manager Bob Whalen is working on getting the nets fixed on holes number two and five. Hopefully he will be able to get the town to provide loam to build up the area in front of the seventh green.

Substantial improvements in the course over the last few years have been done.

The Groton Pool and Golf Center continues to be recreational resource for residents as well as those from surrounding communities. Hundreds of youngsters ages six through high school are involved in the summer swim program.

Local high school golf teams practice and play matches at the Groton GC. Tournaments, women's, seniors, men's and Scotch leagues, to name a few, keep golfers involved throughout spring, summer and fall. Hardy souls continue playing golf until the snow flies!
