William J. Woitowicz Memorial Basketball Tournament
The fourth Annual William J. Woitowicz Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was held the weekend of March 21, with games being played at the Middle School, GDRHS and Lawrence Academy. Seventy-three teams participated in the event.
The tournament is held each year in memory of Sgt. William Woitowicz who died in the line of duty on June 7, 2011 while serving in Afghanistan. A member of the GDRHS class of 2007, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after high school.
Monies raised each year from this memorial tournament go directly into the William J. Woitowicz Memorial Fund. Since its inception, the Fund has been able to provide scholarships to area high school seniors. In 2014, three scholarships were presented to graduates of GDRHS, Westford Academy and Nashoba Valley Technical High School. The Spirit of Billy Award is presented each year to a player who the tournament committee identifies as one who emulates the qualities that Billy would smile down on and say, "They are just like me!" The criteria include sportsmanship, leadership, respect, and enthusiasm for the game of basketball. This year's presentation of the 2015 Spirit of Billy Award was to GDRHS senior Lindsay Werner prior to the semi-finals and finals competition.
